FAQ: Account Access and Authentication

Your Atlas user account password must comply with the following requirements:

  • Contain at least eight characters.

  • Exclude your email address and Atlas username.

  • Differ from your previous 24 passwords.

  • Differ from the most commonly used passwords.

If your password doesn't meet these requirements, Atlas prompts you to create a new one. For password reset instructions, see How do I reset my password?.

The method for resetting your password depends on how you registered:

  • If you registered with your email address, use the MongoDB Atlas login page to reset your password.

  • If you registered with Google, Google manages your credentials. Reset your password through your Google account.

  • If you registered with GitHub, GitHub manages your credentials. Reset your password through your GitHub account.

Verification emails come from the mongodb.com domain. If you don't receive a verification email, verify that your email provider accepts mail from mongodb.com. If the issue persists, contact MongoDB Support.

Atlas requires your GitHub account to have a public email address. If you try to register without a public email address, Atlas returns an error.

To set a public GitHub email address, see GitHub Accounts.

You can link or unlink your Atlas account from your Google or GitHub account at any time:

Atlas uses MFA to verify your identity at login. You can set up many authentication methods, including security keys, Okta Verify, authenticator apps, or email. Configure at least two methods to avoid losing access to your account.

Important

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) replaces Legacy 2FA. As of May 30, 2024, Legacy 2FA is a retired feature. All users with Legacy 2FA will be automatically enrolled in email MFA on their next login.

To learn how to enable and manage MFA, see Manage Your Multi-Factor Authentication Options.

If you lose access to all your MFA methods and can't log in, contact MongoDB Support.

To avoid being locked out, set up at least two MFA methods. To learn more, see Manage Your Multi-Factor Authentication Options.

Atlas requires up to two weeks to process an account deletion. During that time, the email address associated with your deleted account is reserved and unavailable for a new account registration.

After the deletion completes, you can register a new account with the same email address. To learn more, see Unlink Your MongoDB Atlas Account from Your Vercel Account.
