THEIR CHALLENGE

Managing a high-volume data ecosystem at scale

Brazilian data analytics and AI company Trillia specializes in transforming raw data into actionable insights. Positioned within the B3 Brazilian stock exchange ecosystem, it empowers hundreds of enterprise customers across industries such as financial services, telecommunications, and retail to guide their business with evidence-based confidence. “At Trillia, our main focus is not just data, but data intelligence,” explained Marcelo Krüger, Data Engineer, Trillia. “Our goal is to help our clients make critical decisions on things like credit analysis, sales and marketing, and compliance monitoring without needing a large team.”

For years, Trillia relied on MongoDB Community Edition to process large public and commercial datasets. During this time, the environment grew organically, with various engineering teams independently deploying their own clusters. The eventual result was a fragmented landscape of 150 disparate clusters—some exceeding 20 TB of data—running a mix of versions and configurations without centralized governance. The critical inflection point in this complexity came in December 2021, when B3 acquired an artificial intelligence and big data company. The acquisition, which led to the creation of Trillia to expand the exchange's analytics portfolio, resulted in a significant increase in the volume of data that needed to be processed.

The company’s existing infrastructure could no longer keep pace. For a database platform team of just three people, the team is called DataStore and that means significant operational burdens. Maintenance, security patching, and updates were manually intensive, consuming time that could be devoted to higher-value initiatives. Compliance checks were complex and had to be carried out using scripts. During peak demand periods, such as Black Friday, the team had to monitor channels 24/7 and manually respond to data surges to ensure application performance. This repetitive infrastructure maintenance prevented the team from evolving into the innovative force that Trillia required.

"We needed to maximize our time, increase our productivity, and be able to scale safely and transparently without a large team,” explained Krüger. “That’s why we decided to move to MongoDB Atlas; it was the most stable option on the market.”

OUR SOLUTION

A vehicle for multi-cloud resilience with zero downtime

In need of a stable, secure, automated environment that could support mission-critical APIs with 24/7 availability, Trillia migrated its workloads to MongoDB Atlas. Today, it is the company’s core data platform supporting large-scale data processing and a modern microservices-based architecture.

MongoDB Atlas now powers Trillia’s most critical business layers. It handles high-volume data ingestion and storage, application configuration management, and authentication tokens to secure user sessions. It also manages essential back-office functions such as billing systems and operational logs.

Beyond internal functions, MongoDB Atlas supports advanced analytics products that process massive datasets to generate the insights Trillia’s customers in financial services and insurance rely on every day.

A critical feature of the solution is MongoDB Atlas’ multi-cloud capabilities. Trillia was already in the complex process of transferring all its data from Google Cloud to Microsoft Azure—a move that carried significant risk in terms of service disruption and data compromise. “We needed to do the migration without placing excessive burden on our operational team, and without downtime,” said Krüger.

MongoDB Atlas became an essential engine for the move, enabling the team to upgrade database versions and synchronize data between the two different cloud providers in the background with essentially zero downtime. For a team of just three people, this was a lifesaver, eliminating a level of complexity that would otherwise have required six months of manual labor and maintenance.

“MongoDB Atlas saved us six months of work," noted Krüger. "The downtime for migration was essentially zero. This was important because the APIs we provide to banks and the financial sector cannot stop—they must run 24/7. So, this was a bonus for us."

OUTCOME

Transforming infrastructure into a strategic catalyst for growth

By shifting to MongoDB Atlas, Trillia achieved immediate, measurable improvements in its operational efficiency. The time required to deploy a new database cluster dropped from four hours—and in some cases a day—to just 10 minutes. “This was the first benefit we experienced,” said Krüger. “And it was golden for our teams.”

By integrating MongoDB Atlas SSO, Trillia reduced database access request times from 15 minutes to mere seconds. “Before, I had to manually register a user and set up the password,” said Krüger. “Now, access is almost instant.” These gains enable engineering teams to launch new services faster and respond to market needs with unprecedented agility.

Security and compliance have also been radically strengthened. “Now that we have our clusters in MongoDB Atlas, compliance policies are automated, so we no longer have to rely on scripts,” said Krüger. “As a result, it’s easier to carry out any backups or disaster recovery procedures, as well as to comply with government requirements.”

Auto-scaling now manages demand spikes, ensuring stable services for end customers without manual intervention. “Prior to MongoDB Atlas, we needed 24/7 alerts and had to monitor the channel manually in case of sudden peaks,” explained Krüger. “Now, Atlas acts proactively. It’s much, much quicker—which means resources our clients need access to don’t slow down or become suddenly unavailable.”

Consequently, Trillia has been able to shift its team’s focus from infrastructure management to higher value initiatives, including strategically advising on best practices across business units to optimize data architecture from the start.

Looking ahead, Trillia plans to expand the use of MongoDB Atlas as a holistic platform across all its business units. Its roadmap includes leveraging MongoDB Vector Search and MongoDB Search to replace legacy technologies, as well as integrating AI agents to accelerate innovation.

As its MongoDB journey continues, Trillia has shifted from maintenance to mission-critical strategy, powering the next generation of data intelligence across the B3 ecosystem.
