TriZetto Modernizes Data Storage with MongoDB

Photo of company employees.

Their Challenge

For TriZetto, managing on-premises databases consumed engineering time with patches, replication, and disaster recovery.

Our Solution

After extensive security audits, TriZetto migrated to MongoDB Atlas, starting with proof-of-concept projects before expanding company-wide.

Outcome

TriZetto achieved 80% reductions in latency and manual tasks, 2x–3x performance improvements, and significant cost savings.

THEIR CHALLENGE

Managing mission-critical healthcare data at scale

TriZetto Provider Solutions (TriZetto) provides critical technology infrastructure that links major health plans and healthcare providers, handling everything from claims processing to revenue cycle management and fraud detection. Every day, the healthcare information of millions of insured Americans flows through TriZetto’s systems.

Since 2013, TriZetto has relied on MongoDB to power its core administrative platforms, running multiple instances of MongoDB Enterprise Advanced on premises. “Our information must be secure, and we require a solution that’s reliable, fast, and can store various formats of data,” said Robert Wise, Chief Information Officer at TriZetto. “MongoDB provides the best experience and the flexibility to quickly adapt to changing regulations and a changing market.”

But over the years, self-managing these databases had become increasingly resource intensive. TriZetto’s teams spent hours tuning databases, applying patches, setting up replication, and managing disaster recovery. The administrative overhead pulled the company’s focus away from innovation and product development. Meanwhile, the healthcare industry continued to evolve rapidly, with government mandates sometimes requiring major system changes in as little as six months.

Watch TriZetto's CIO, Robert Wise, share the strategy behind migrating mission-critical healthcare workloads to MongoDB Atlas.

As TriZetto embarked on an enterprise-wide cloud migration, the timing was right to reconsider its database strategy. The company needed a solution that could meet stringent HIPAA compliance requirements while delivering the speed and reliability that its partners demanded—all without the operational overhead of managing infrastructure.

OUR SOLUTION

Using MongoDB Atlas to modernize healthcare infrastructure for TriZetto

MongoDB Atlas, a fully managed cloud database platform, offered TriZetto a chance to remove operational overhead while maintaining the performance and security the company required. But given the sensitivity of the healthcare data it manages, TriZetto couldn’t take any shortcuts. The team conducted extensive due diligence of MongoDB Atlas, with multiple rounds of security audits to verify that the service met every HIPAA compliance requirement and could prevent any risk of data exfiltration.

MongoDB Atlas passed every test. It offered the dependability, redundancy, security, and high availability that TriZetto’s mission-critical systems demanded. The team would no longer need to manage patches, replication, or disaster recovery.

TriZetto approached its migration to MongoDB Atlas methodically, starting with parts of a single product as a proof of concept. Once that succeeded, the team migrated a second product. With confidence building, TriZetto leadership established MongoDB Atlas as the default platform for any new solution requiring unstructured data storage. Throughout the journey, the MongoDB team delivered extensive training and provided hands-on support, conducting working sessions at multiple TriZetto offices.

TriZetto’s success with MongoDB Atlas extended beyond the original MongoDB workloads. TriZetto was running databases on other platforms and decided to evaluate whether MongoDB Atlas could handle those as well. The MongoDB team worked closely with TriZetto to conduct a thorough comparison, and MongoDB Atlas once again proved to be the superior choice.

“When we moved to MongoDB Atlas, we saw incredible cost savings and performance lifts. These wins empowered us to continue to roll this solution out, which led to more savings, which led to more performance improvements.”

This momentum led TriZetto to consider even broader possibilities through the MongoDB Application Modernization Platform (AMP). “Because this project was so successful, we decided to move from a competing hyperscaler product to MongoDB Atlas. We haven’t looked back,” said Wise. “We’re also looking to move some relational databases onto MongoDB Atlas as part of AMP and see what the art of the possible is.”

OUTCOME

Achieving continual improvements through modernization

TriZetto’s Unify platform and Connected Health products now run on MongoDB Atlas, with multiple business units continuing to migrate. By making this move, TriZetto achieved an 80% reduction in latency, an 80% reduction in manual tasks, and performance that was 2 to 3 times faster than before. Additionally, TriZetto saved $1.1 million in costs.

“When we moved to MongoDB Atlas, we saw incredible cost savings and performance lifts,” said Wise. “These wins empowered us to continue to roll this solution out, which led to more savings, which led to more performance improvements.”

With fully managed MongoDB Atlas, the administrative burden that once consumed engineering time disappeared, freeing teams to focus on innovation and product development. TriZetto can use the flexibility and rapid deployment capabilities of MongoDB Atlas to respond quickly to its fast-moving regulatory environment, where government mandates can require significant system changes on tight timelines.

Each successful migration reinforces MongoDB Atlas as the foundation for TriZetto’s modern cloud infrastructure. “Modern technologies, like MongoDB Atlas, enable us to bring in resources that provide a different experience from traditional client/server architecture or cloud-based tools,” said Wise. “Before, you may have just said, ‘Hey, we’ve got the relational database, and this is the only way we can do it.’ Now we go, ‘Well, maybe this isn’t the perfect fit. But we can now use this other tool in our toolkit. Is this a better fit? Yep, this one works better.’”
