Atlas Gen2 on GCP for M30+ Dedicated clusters

September 1, 2026

What it is: GCP Gen2 is a new generation of Atlas M30+ Dedicated clusters on GCP that delivers significant performance improvements with the ability to scale Standard IOPS independently from storage capacity.

Who it’s for: This update is for teams running production Atlas workloads on GCP, especially DBAs, platform engineers, and engineering leaders who care about performance and cost optimization and want to take advantage of the latest hardware offerings.

Why it matters: Historically, customers often had to increase storage just to get the IOPS their workloads needed, which could lead to overprovisioning and unnecessary spending. GCP Gen2 decouples storage and performance, enabling teams to right-size more precisely and optimize costs more effectively.

GCP Gen2 also improves compute performance compared to the previous generation and expands access to newer infrastructure, increasing available capacity in constrained regions.

How to get started: GCP Gen2 begins rolling out on September 9, 2026, in supported GCP regions, with additional rollout waves in October.  For new M30+ clusters in supported regions, Gen2 will be the recommended default, while eligible existing Gen1 clusters can opt in to migrate to Gen2. Gen2 is available for UI users and programmatic users (e.g., Terraform, Atlas CLI, Atlas Admin API).
