MongoDB Expands Cloud Offering with a Free Tier and Live Migration Utility
*MongoDB Atlas now gives developers free access to an always-on, secure cloud platform for building next generation applications *
NEW YORK, NY and PALO ALTO, CA – March 7, 2017 – MongoDB, the database for giant ideas, today announced a new free tier for its database as a service offering, MongoDB Atlas. MongoDB is also releasing a utility that will support the live migration of data from any location, either on-premise or in the cloud, to MongoDB Atlas.
“Since we first introduced MongoDB to the community in 2009, we have been laser-focused on one thing — building a technology that gets out of the way of developers and makes them more productive,” said Eliot Horowitz, CTO and Co-Founder of MongoDB. “Now, with these updates to MongoDB Atlas, we’re tearing down more of the barriers that stand between developers and their giant ideas.”
Engineered by the same team that built MongoDB, MongoDB Atlas incorporates the best practices of real world use cases, from startups to Fortune 500 companies. By making it free to get started and adding a way to seamlessly migrate over existing workloads, anyone can now easily take advantage of the best database as a service product in the market.
MongoDB Atlas now offers a free cluster with 512 MB of storage. As with all dedicated MongoDB Atlas clusters, the nodes in a free tier deployment are distributed to ensure high availability. Users will also have their data secured by default with authorization via SCRAM-SHA-1, TLS/SSL encryption for data traveling over networks, and encrypted storage volumes for data at rest.
For users who are already running MongoDB, the new MongoMirror migration utility enables them to seamlessly pull data from their pre-existing deployments and push it into MongoDB Atlas for a simplified live migration process. The MongoMirror migration utility will work with any pre-existing MongoDB replica set running MongoDB 3.0 or higher. A hosted version of this live migration tool will soon be available in MongoDB Atlas.
Launched last June, MongoDB Atlas is already used by thousands of organizations across the world, including industry leaders eHarmony and Thermo Fisher Scientific. HT2 Labs, a UK-based research and development company, recently migrated its education data platform from a third-party MongoDB service provider to MongoDB Atlas to reduce costs and better scale their business.
“The move to MongoDB Atlas has been a great win for us,” said James Mullaney, Technical Director at HT2 Labs, “We were able to scale to 5 times as much data while keeping database costs flat. Also, protecting our data assets is critical as we handle massive amounts of private education data. The fact that MongoDB’s native security features are baked into the Atlas platform made our migration decision that much easier.”
