What it is: Atlas App Connections is a feature that lets a user connect an AI coding tool, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor, to a MongoDB Atlas account using OAuth 2.1. Once authorized, the AI coding tool can provision, manage, and query Atlas resources on the user's behalf through the Atlas MCP Server, without requiring a long-lived credential.
Who it's for: This is for developers who use AI coding tools and want those tools to interact with their MongoDB Atlas resources without manually generating or sharing credentials. It also serves Atlas Organization Owners who need to control and monitor which AI tools can access their organization's Atlas resources.
Why it matters: By replacing shared, long-lived credentials with a one-click, revocable authorization flow, the feature reduces both the setup friction of connecting AI coding tools to Atlas and the standing security risk that comes with credential sharing. Organization Owners retain visibility into every connection and can restrict, disable, or revoke access at any time.
How to get started: Atlas Organization Owners can enable AI client access from Organization Settings, after which users can connect a supported AI coding tool and authorize access with a single click.
