Atlas Gen2 on AWS for M30+ Dedicated clusters

June 30, 2026

What it is:  AWS Gen2 is a new generation of Atlas M30+ Dedicated clusters on AWS that delivers significant performance improvements with the ability to scale Standard IOPS independently from storage capacity.

Who it’s for:  This update is for teams running production Atlas workloads on AWS, especially DBAs, platform engineers, and engineering leaders who care about performance, cost optimization, and staying on current hardware.

Why it matters:  Historically, customers often had to increase storage just to get the IOPS their workloads needed, which led to overprovisioning and unnecessary spending. AWS Gen2 decouples storage and performance so teams can right-size more precisely and optimize cost more effectively.

Gen2 also improves Atlas’s price-performance story on AWS and helps Atlas move onto newer infrastructure as older instance families face tighter regional capacity and are no longer being expanded in the same way.

How to get started:  AWS Gen2 begins rolling out on June 30, 2026 in supported AWS regions, with additional rollout waves through August and September. For new M30+ clusters in supported regions, Gen2 will be the recommended default, while existing eligible Gen1 clusters can opt-in to move to Gen2.   Gen2 is available for UI users and programmatic users (e.g Terraform, Atlas CLI, Atlas Admin API).
