Vancouver MUG: MongoDB User Group Re-Boot Social Gathering!

It’s time! After a two+ year hiatus, the Vancouver MongoDB User Group (VanMUG) is back! For our first event, we’re going to keep things simple and informal with a social event. This event is for anyone interested in assisting with the care and feeding of VanMUG or those that might be interested in potentially speaking at a future MUG. As an added bonus, we’ll have some folks (both local and international) from MongoDB in attendance.

For those of you who haven’t attended our meet-ups in the past, we have always tried to maintain a balance in topics from fairly technical to “case studies” of organizations using MongoDB. There’s always a social element to our events and it’s a great way to connect with the local MongoDB community which has grown rapidly over the past few years.

The event will be held in downtown Vancouver with the exact location to be announced once we have a better idea of the numbers — please be sure to RSVP! Hope to see you there!

Event Type: In-Person
:world_map: Location: Yaletown Brewing - 1111 Mainland St.

Hey everyone! Looking forward to meeting you tonight! I’ll be easy to spot because I have bright blue hair.

Oh also when you get here it’s the “Mark MongoDB” table.

Thanks folks for dropping by! It was wonderful to meet everyone!

Event Wrap-Up:

Because the Vancouver MUG hasn’t met together in literal years, and because Vancouver gets mere days of sun per year, and this month has most of them , we decided on a smaller social thing to break the ice.

We were joined by @Mark_Clancy (lead organizer), members of the MongoDB Community Team (@Stennie and @webchick — aka me), MongoDB engineers @Xander_Neben and @Frederic_Vitzikam, and @Jamie_Jann and @Sean_Brophy from Rain City Housing, who use MongoDB as a data warehouse to help people experiencing homelessness and mental health, trauma and substance use issues, throughout BC’s lower mainland.

Among the topics discussed were engineering best practices, Queryable Encryption, strategies for storing large binary data, and tools and tricks of analysis of large data sets.

This was an awesome “reboot” event, and thank you so much to @Mark_Clancy for leading the organization efforts!

Thanks for posting the photo Angie! Great to see everyone again!
