10gen Releases Cloud-Based Monitoring and Alerting Solution for MongoDB

SAN FRANCISCO—10gen, the company behind MongoDB, today announced the general availability of MongoDB Monitoring Service (MMS), a new monitoring service that is available free of charge to all MongoDB users. Delivered via software as a service (SaaS), MMS provides visibility into current and historical operations to facilitate proactive alerts, support and response on system performance and availability. In preview since March, more than 200 customers are using the service’s traditional monitoring statistics as well as dozens of MongoDB-specific metrics, charts and alerts to assist with database operations, performance operations and troubleshooting.

With MMS, monitoring both very large and small MongoDB clusters is significantly easier. After signing up for the service online, simply download the MMS agent, install it on a single server, and within minutes data for the entire cluster is visible in the interactive Web-based user interface. MMS auto-discovers MongoDB nodes and securely transmits important metrics such as memory usage, data base connections, index misses, read and write operations, memory consumption and CPU usage, and issues alerts when failure situations are detected.

"MMS adds enormous value to 10gen's support capabilities,” said Ray Howell, vice president of architecture at Monster.com. “After adding MMS to our cluster, 10gen's engineers detected an anomaly in our production deployment and proactively reached out to us to fix the problem before it became a production incident. We didn't even have to file a ticket. This gives us great confidence in 10gen's ability to support us going forward and demonstrates 10gen's commitment in partnering with Monster to ensure success."

MongoDB is an open source, document-oriented database, combining scalability, performance and ease of use with traditional relational database features such as dynamic queries and indexes. It has become the leading NoSQL database choice for Fortune 500 enterprises and Web 2.0 companieshat are developing innovative large-scale applications and performing real-time "big data" analytics.

“MMS has proved to be an invaluable tool for MMS preview users. Now at full release, the entire MongoDB community can benefit from the service’s proactive monitoring,” said Eliot Horowitz, chief technology officer and co-founder of 10gen. “Our engineers have contributed to hundreds of the world's largest, most complex MongoDB deployments. The best practices learned from those successful deployments are automated within MMS to ensure customers have complete confidence in their infrastructure." MongoDB is a key data infrastructure component for companies both large and small. 10gen recently announced $20 million in financing, from existing investors Sequoia Capital, Flybridge Capital and Union Square Ventures, which will be used to address the growing global demand for MongoDB across enterprises, including Disney, Ericsson, Viacom, Telefonica and SAP.

Availability: MMS is generally available on September 28, 2011. To register for the service, please visit: http://mms.10gen.com/user/register. Additional MMS information will be shared over the coming months; please visit the MongoDB blog regularly for updates: http://blog.10gen.com/
