What happens to my snapshots / backups after a major version upgrade of my clusters?

Happy new year!

I can’t find any information about what will happen to the snapshots that I have on my current production cluster when I upgrade the cluster to a new major release version.

I am going from 4.2 to 4.4 and then from 4.4 to 5.

I have read here that I cannot restore a backup on a different major version, but does that mean that all my backups will become unavailable once I upgrade the cluster?

Hi @Edouard_Finet

I have read here that I cannot restore a backup on a different major version

Although it’s not officially supported, most times, features are added to newer major versions instead of removed. This means that you can mongodump from an older version, but doing mongorestore might not be as straightforward, but still within the realm of possibility.

Having said that, if I’m in your shoes, I would do a complete mongodump on each major version step, so that your dumps are always up to date, and ready to be restored just in case the latest upgrade step doesn’t work out.

Hope this helps!

Best regards
Kevin

thank you! I came to the same conclusion but it’s always nice to have it confirmed by someone independently
