Tell us about your journey as a MongoDB User Group leader.
We started the MongoDB User Group Chandigarh chapter in 2023 with a very small group of attendees. As backend developers, we have always worked closely with databases and have used MongoDB in several real-world projects. That naturally inspired us to build a local community where developers could discuss practical use cases and learn from each other. Over time, the community has grown steadily. From a handful of members in the beginning, we are now close to 1000 members, which has been amazing to witness.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a MUG leader?
The most rewarding moments are seeing developers gain confidence and opportunities through the community. Watching first-time speakers share their knowledge, seeing attendees ask deep technical questions, and hearing how meetups helped someone learn a new technology or land a role in tech makes the effort worthwhile. Another of our favorite experiences is when community members return as speakers after attending earlier events. It shows the real impact of a strong developer community where learning turns into contribution.
Do you have any tips for developers looking to build a community?
Start with consistency and genuine intent to help people learn. Even small meetups can create a meaningful impact if the focus is on knowledge sharing and collaboration. Encourage community members to participate, speak, and contribute rather than just attend. Partner with local companies, universities, and developers to grow the ecosystem. Most importantly, listen to your community and understand what they want to learn and adapt your events accordingly. A successful community grows when members feel ownership and belonging.
What’s your favorite thing about being part of the MongoDB Community?
One of our favorite things about the MongoDB community is the enthusiasm developers have for learning and experimenting with databases. We have several MUG chapters across India, and every community supports each other. In our MUG Chandigarh events, people especially enjoy hands-on activities. These sessions make learning interactive and fun. We also have a diverse audience, including working professionals and interns who are genuinely interested in MongoDB. Seeing this mix of experience levels come together and learn from each other makes the community very special.
