As part of this recognition, we asked them a couple of questions about their journey. Keep reading to learn more about how amazing Mo and Sandeep are.
Tell us about your journey as a MongoDB User Group leader.
Mohamed Amr: My journey as a MongoDB User Group leader started in 2024, when I was invited to attend a MongoDB event in Cairo. During the event, the MongoDB team introduced the MUG program, and I immediately saw an opportunity to help build a stronger local community around data, developers, and modern application development. I volunteered to establish the Cairo MongoDB User Group, and what started as an idea quickly became a growing community. Over the first year, we successfully built momentum through meetups, community engagement, knowledge-sharing sessions, and support from passionate members. One of the biggest milestones was seeing the Cairo MUG grow to more than 1,000 members, which showed me how strong the demand is for technical communities in the region. After moving to Dubai for work, I was again invited by the MongoDB team to help reactivate the Dubai MongoDB User Group. Since then, we have organized two meetups, and the group has already grown to more than 320 members. Leading both communities has been a rewarding experience, from overcoming the challenges of starting from scratch, attracting attendees, and building trust, to seeing members connect, learn, and grow together.
Sandeep: My MongoDB User Group journey has been an exciting path of continuous learning, community engagement, and knowledge sharing. I first discovered the MongoDB User Group program in September 2024 and was immediately inspired by the opportunity to connect with fellow data professionals and contribute to the growing MongoDB ecosystem. In February 2025, I took the next step by becoming a Co-MUG Leader, which allowed me to actively support community initiatives and help create meaningful learning experiences for MongoDB enthusiasts.Throughout this journey, balancing community leadership, professional commitments, and ongoing learning has been both a challenge and a growth opportunity. The experience has strengthened my technical skills, expanded my professional network, and reinforced my passion for helping others learn and succeed with MongoDB.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a MUG leader?
Mohamed Amr: My most rewarding moment as a MUG leader usually comes after each event, when I see community members sharing their experiences on LinkedIn with their own networks. Seeing people post about what they learned, who they met, and how the event added value to them is incredibly meaningful. I also really appreciate when members share their MongoDB skill badges after attending our sessions. It is a simple post, but it represents something much bigger: someone gained a new skill, became more confident, or took one step forward in their learning journey because of the community we are building. For me, that is the real impact of being a MUG leader. It is not only about organizing meetups; it is about creating opportunities for people to learn, grow, connect, and proudly share their achievements. Seeing that impact happen in public makes all the effort truly worth it.
Sandeep: One of the most rewarding moments in my journey was seeing the impact of community engagement and continuous learning come together. In June 2025, I had the opportunity to speak at a MUG event on “Harness the Power of Native Data Visualization with MongoDB Atlas Charts,” sharing practical insights with fellow MongoDB enthusiasts and professionals. Another proud milestone was successfully earning all 25 MongoDB University Skill Badges by Feb-2025, demonstrating my commitment to deepening my MongoDB expertise and encouraging community members to pursue their own learning paths. What made these achievements even more meaningful was seeing participants share their event experiences, learnings, and accomplishments on LinkedIn, often referencing the MUG event as a catalyst for their growth. Witnessing community members gain new skills, expand their professional networks, and celebrate their successes has been the most fulfilling aspect of being a MUG leader.
Do you have any tips for developers looking to build a community?
Mohamed Amr: My advice for developers looking to build a community is to start before everything feels perfect. In the beginning, attendance may be low, engagement may be slow, and it can feel difficult to measure the impact right away. Do not let that discourage you. Community building requires consistency, patience, and genuine passion. Focus on creating value for the people who show up, even if the group is small at first. Every meetup, every post, every conversation, and every connection helps build momentum. Do not wait for immediate results. Start, keep showing up, listen to your members, and do the work with dedication. Over time, the community will grow in ways you may not have imagined, and the impact will become much bigger than the numbers
Sandeep: Building a successful user community starts with creating genuine value and fostering meaningful connections. It requires passion and my key advice is to focus on consistency rather than scale in the early stages. Regular meetups, knowledge-sharing sessions, and open discussions help establish trust and encourage long-term participation. Also celebrating member milestones such as certifications, project launches, or speaking achievements motivates individuals and inspires others to pursue their own growth journey. The MongoDB university has great free learning resources. Make maximum use of it. Few other important tips to build/grow community are to prioritize learning opportunities and empower community members, leverage social platforms and consider all types of members with varying skill levels.
What’s your favorite thing about being part of the MongoDB Community?
Mohamed Amr: When I first started, everyone was extremely generous with their knowledge, guidance, and experience. No one hesitated to share advice, answer questions, or help me understand how to build and grow a successful user group. That support made a real difference in my early days as a leader. I also appreciate how the community helps amplify each other’s work. Fellow leaders helped me spread the word about my events, supported the announcements, and encouraged more people to join. Some user groups even invited me to speak at their virtual events, which was a valuable and rewarding experience. For me, the MongoDB Community feels like more than a network. It is a group of people who genuinely want to see each other succeed.
Sandeep: My favorite thing about being part of the MongoDB Community is the opportunity to learn, share, and grow alongside passionate technology professionals.Being involved as a MongoDB User Group leader has allowed me to connect with developers, architects, and data enthusiasts who are eager to explore new technologies and share their experiences. Whether it’s organizing events, speaking on MongoDB topics, earning MongoDB University badges, or seeing community members celebrate their own achievements, every interaction reinforces the collaborative spirit that makes the MongoDB Community special. What I value most is that the community is not just about technology—it’s about helping people learn, build confidence, create meaningful connections, and succeed together.
