Tell us about your journey to becoming a MongoDB User Group leader
My journey began from a genuine love for MongoDB first as a Community Creator, where I met supportive MongoDB leaders who inspired me. I became a Lagos MUG leader because I saw many developers hungry for practical MongoDB learning. We started with 20 attendees, and the momentum has grown fast. In under five months, I expanded our WhatsApp group from 0 to over 500 members, Meetup to 510+, LinkedIn to 100+, and Twitter/X to 50+. Seeing builders and senior engineers attend to learn MongoDB and build real solutions has been the most powerful evolution.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a MUG leader?
My most rewarding moment was seeing members move from curiosity to actually building with MongoDB and some securing roles because of the knowledge they gained. When founders and senior engineers told me “your workshop helped us ship a feature,” I realized this community isn’t just a meeting, it’s transforming careers. Additionally, witnessing returning members mentor newcomers has been deeply fulfilling in less than five months; Lagos MUG has already become a supportive family of innovators and impact-driven builders.
What’s your favorite thing about being part of the MongoDB Community?
The genuine spirit of support. People don’t just share tools; they share knowledge freely. MongoDB has made the developer community feel like a place where curiosity is welcomed, beginners are not intimidated, and practical innovation is encouraged. It’s a community that makes learning feel exciting.
Do you have any tips for developers looking to build a community?
Folasayo shares their top advice: Start with a real human connection, not technology. Focus on solving meaningful needs, not hosting “events.” Be consistent even if the numbers are small. Co-create with your members: ask them what topics they would like to see next. Make the community about impact, not hype, and highlight wins from members. Document everything in public. And don’t be afraid to collaborate with other ecosystems; that’s how you grow faster.
Where can developers connect with or learn more about you?
Want to catch Folasayo at an upcoming event or connect with them? Use any of the channels: LinkedIn. Twitter/X. GitHub. Blog.
Thank you very much, Folasayo, for sharing your story with us today and for all the incredible work you’ve done for the MongoDB Community. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next.
