I have tried doing
sudo chown -R mongodb:mongodb /var/lib/mongodb
sudo chown mongodb:mongodb /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
doesn’t seem to work
Please share what is in the logs.

As @steevej suggested, please check the MongoDB logs for more context on why the process is shutting down.
Please also confirm:

version of MongoDB server you are installing

O/S version
-
method you used to install MongoDB
If you installed MongoDB using one of the Installation Tutorials and used the official packages, all of the file and directory permissions should be correct as long as you are starting and stopping MongoDB using the service definition.

Your thread title installing mongodb for first time seems to be in contradiction (because of the first time part) with the fatal error you get.
The error messages tell us that mongod found existing data file in the specified directory and that the data files are incompatible with the version you just installed.
May be it is true that you are installing the first time on this machine because you imported the data files from another installation.
The files you imported from another machine or the data files created by a previous install on this machine are either important to you or not. If they are not important, you may just delete the content of the directory and start over. However, if the files are important to you, you must install the version that was running when the data files were updated, then follow the documented migration path.
