Hacktoberfest 2020!

What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software first created by DigitalOcean in 2013. Hacktoberfest encourages experienced developers and novices alike to get involved with community open source projects by contributing code, documentation, and bug fixes to open source projects during the month of October. Participants who submit four pull requests (updates to an open source software repository) in public repositories on GitHub during the month of October will earn a limited edition Hacktoberfest t-shirt.

What will MongoDB be doing for Hacktoberfest?

MongoDB’s core values of “Think Big, Go Far”, “Make it Matter”, and “Build Together” come together naturally during Hacktoberfest. To make it easy for you to participate in Hacktoberfest, MongoDB will be hosting several online events throughout October. Members of the MongoDB Engineering and Product teams will be at the events and here in the forums to help those making their first pull request and providing assistance and encouragement.

We are focusing our efforts around O-FISH, the open source mobile application that helps WildAid patrol for illegal fishing and keep our oceans pristine. This project has been an amazing and fulfilling opportunity for our engineers and we want to encourage others to get involved and help us with this vital cause. We will also be featuring other community open source projects that utilize MongoDB Solutions including mongod, Atlas, and Realm to help members of the community find the right opportunity to contribute and earn their shirt!

We will also be awarding forum badges to community members who complete Hacktoberfest and a special “O-FISH Contributor” badge to any community member who helps improve #o-fish by submitting a pull request with improvements, bug fixes, or documentation enhancements.

How can I get involved?

There are several ways to get involved:

  • Sign up to get updates on Hacktoberfest and register in October.

  • Check out the events being hosted virtually from around the world, including MongoDB hosted events. We will be getting started with a virtual kickoff event October 6th.

  • If you haven’t contributed to a GitHub repository before, check out this guide on making your first pull request.

  • Recommend an open source project in this thread that utilizes MongoDB tools (MongoDB server, Atlas, Realm, etc) so we can feature them and help bring in new contributors. We will contact project maintainers and provide information about how to get the most out of Hacktoberfest. We will also promote selected projects throughout October here in the community forum, on social media and in other places.
