Atlas Cluster Migration Consulting

A MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration consulting engagement is designed to help you smoothly migrate your existing self-managed MongoDB cluster to MongoDB Atlas and to maximize your Atlas investment right from the start. A MongoDB project manager and consulting engineer(s) will work with you and your team to plan, test and execute the migration and optimize your Atlas usage.

Key Activities Summary

The MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration engagement includes the following activities:

Migration Planning and Testing: A MongoDB consulting engineer will work with your team to determine the optimal Atlas cluster size and configuration based on your existing deployment and application requirements, including monitoring and backup configuration, and to develop an Atlas cluster migration plan and application cut-over procedure, support a dry run of the migration in a test environment, and conduct pre-migration load testing.

Enterprise Integrations: Using the Atlas API, the MongoDB consulting engineer will provide guidance on integrating Atlas with your enterprise systems for security logging, monitoring, backup, and end-to-end automation.

Production Migration: The MongoDB consulting engineer will assist your team with its execution of the migration.

Performance Evaluation and Tuning: After your team has completed the migration, the MongoDB consulting engineer will review Atlas cluster performance metrics, assess application access patterns, and identify opportunities for optimization.

Throughout the engagement, we will provide project management oversight to ensure smooth and seamless migration. Our project manager will work with your project management team to plan the project, align resources and timelines, and manage risks, issues and changes. MongoDB will prepare relevant documents and present them to you.

Typical Documentation

Below is a list of documents typically provided during the MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration engagement. The actual documents provided may differ.

Project Management Documentation

Project Plan

A step-by-step blueprint that describes the detailed delivery plan, including timelines, task assignments and task-dependencies.

Status Reports

Reports delivered on a mutually agreed schedule providing the status of the project, completed and outstanding actions, open issues and newly identified risks.

Typical Schedule

The schedule below describes a typical timeline for a MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration. The actual timeline may differ depending on your particular needs. A MongoDB project manager will work with your teams to create and manage a project plan that aligns to your business needs and constraints and will advise on any issues or risks that may cause unexpected delays.

Within 1 weekWithin 2 weeksWithin 3 weeksWithin 6 weeks

Project Planning: Our project manager will work with your project manager and delivery teams to develop a shared project management and implementation plan, agreed upon roles and responsibilities, task assignments, dependencies and timelines.

Requirements Gathering: We will hold sessions with your team to gather technical requirements for the MongoDB Atlas migration, re-validating MongoDB Atlas cluster size, monitoring and backup configuration.

Establish baseline performance standards: We will work with your team to capture baseline performance standards of the application you plan to migrate to MongoDB Atlas.

Migration Planning: We will work with your team to setup a MongoDB Atlas cluster and configure it according to your predefined technical requirements. Together, we will also define the cluster-specific migration plan, considering application downtime constraints.

Migration Testing: We will work with your team to execute a dry run of the migration plan in a test environment, and will support your high availability and application-specific load testing of the MongoDB Atlas cluster.

Support MongoDB Atlas Enterprise API integrations: We will work with your team to configure integrations natively supported by MongoDB Atlas, and support your team’s development of other required integrations using the MongoDB Atlas API.

Production Migration: We will assist your team with its execution of the migration in the production environment.

Performance Evaluation and Tuning: After your team has executed the production migration to MongoDB Atlas, we will review MongoDB Atlas cluster performance metrics against the baseline to check for any performance degradation or latent issues. We will assess application access patterns and provide recommendations for further optimization.

Other Engagement Details

  • A MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration is limited to a single MongoDB cluster, usually representing one project or application.

  • MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration does not include upgrading an application using an end-of-life version of MongoDB to a supported version prior to the Atlas migration. We offer such upgrade assistance as part of the Major Version Upgrade Planning and Testing consulting package, which you may purchase separately.

  • MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration services are delivered remotely.

  • MongoDB Atlas Cluster Migration includes four days for the project management activities and sixteen days for the technical activities described above. New information or the unavailability of customer resources may cause a change in scope or timeline that requires you to purchase additional Consulting Services.

  • You are responsible for the installation, configuration, and management of any non-MongoDB software.

  • You are responsible for providing access to the relevant key stakeholders needed to complete the activities described above.

  • You are responsible for designating personnel with administrative access to the application and source database environment to execute the migration.

  • You remain responsible for any application code or configuration changes required for the migration.
