# Export Cloud Backup Snapshots to AWS S3

**Note:**

This feature is available for `M10` clusters or higher. To learn more about which features are available for Free clusters, see [Atlas Free Cluster Limits](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/free-shared-limitations.md#std-label-atlas-free-tier), and for Flex clusters, see [Atlas Flex Limitations.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/flex-limitations.md#std-label-flex-cluster-limitations)

Atlas lets you export your Cloud Backup snapshots to AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) buckets. You can export snapshots over the public network or over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink. You can export snapshots in two ways:

- To automatically export snapshots as your [backup policy](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) creates them, see [Export Snapshots Automatically.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-configure-snapshot-policy-aws)

- To manually export a single existing snapshot, see [Export a Single Snapshot Manually.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-create-export-job-aws)

Each procedure requires the same [prerequisites.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws)

For an overview of how Atlas exports snapshots and the files it uploads, see [Export Cloud Backup Snapshots to Object Storage.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export.md#std-label-cloud-provider-snapshot-export)

**Note:**

To ensure the immutability of your backup files for compliance and security, you can enable [AWS S3 Object Lock](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/object-lock-configure.html). Object locks prevent deletions and modifications of exported backup files.

## Limitations

You can't perform the following actions:

- Export [fallback snapshots.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/restore-from-snapshot.md#std-label-cps-fallback-snapshots)

- Have more than one active export per snapshot.

- Export [view collections](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/manual/core/views/), or [system collections](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/manual/reference/system-collections/), except for `<database>.system.js` collections.

- Export snapshots from clusters in an Atlas project that has [Encryption at Rest using Customer Key Management](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security-kms-encryption.md#std-label-security-kms-encryption) enabled with network access restricted to specific IP addresses. This restriction doesn't apply if Atlas reaches your KMS (Key Management Service) through a private endpoint. To learn how to configure a private endpoint to your KMS (Key Management Service), see the [AWS instructions](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security/aws-kms-over-private-endpoint.md#std-label-security-aws-kms-pvt-endpoint) or the [Azure instructions.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security/azure-kms-over-private-endpoint.md#std-label-security-azure-kms-pvt-endpoint)

- Export snapshots over [Private Endpoints](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security-configure-private-endpoints.md#std-label-atlas-configure-private-endpoint) (private exports) for Azure (Microsoft Azure) or Google Cloud clusters.

- Export snapshots taken from MongoDB versions that have reached end of life (EOL). See the [MongoDB Software Lifecycle Schedules](https://www.mongodb.com/legal/support-policy/lifecycles?tck=docs_atlas) for version EOL dates.

- Export snapshots to an Azure (Microsoft Azure) storage account if its firewall rules block public access.

## Required Access

- To create or manage a Cloud Backup export schedule or configure a Cloud Backup export bucket in Atlas, you must have [`Project Backup Manager`](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/user-roles.md#mongodb-authrole-Project-Backup-Manager) or [`Project Owner`](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/user-roles.md#mongodb-authrole-Project-Owner) to the project.

- To create or manage a Cloud Backup export job, you must have [`Project Backup Export Operator`](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/user-roles.md#mongodb-authrole-Project-Backup-Export-Operator) or [`Project Owner`](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/user-roles.md#mongodb-authrole-Project-Owner) access to the project.

- To create or manage a Cloud Backup object storage private endpoint, you must have [`Project Owner`](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/reference/user-roles.md#mongodb-authrole-Project-Owner) access to the project.

## Configure and Run Exports

### Prerequisites

To export your Cloud Backup snapshots, you need an `M10` or higher Atlas cluster with [Cloud Backup enabled](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/overview.md#std-label-backup-cloud-provider). In addition, to set up Atlas access to your object store, you must do the following:

1. Set up AWS access for Atlas.

   Follow the directions in [Set Up Unified AWS Access](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security/set-up-unified-aws-access.md#std-label-set-up-unified-aws-access) to create and authorize an AWS (Amazon Web Services) access role in Atlas. A cloud provider access role is a record in Atlas that identifies an [AWS IAM role](http://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/id_roles_use.html) in your AWS (Amazon Web Services) account and allows Atlas to assume the role to access your AWS (Amazon Web Services) resources.

   Save the `roleId` value of the access role for later use when you [configure an export bucket](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-configure-snapshot-policy-aws) in Atlas.

2. Create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

   If you do not have an existing AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket to store your exported snapshots, create an Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) general purpose bucket in the region of your choice.

   To learn how to create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket, see the [Amazon S3 documentation.](http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/create-bucket-overview.html)

3. Attach a bucket access policy to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role.

   Create and attach an [identity-based policy](http://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/access_policies_create.html) to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role that grants it write access permissions to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

   Save the following example policy to a file named `s3-access-policy.json` and replace the `<bucketName>` placeholders with the name of your AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

   The policy grants `s3:PutObject` and `s3:GetBucketLocation` permissions to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role for the specified bucket.

   ```json
   {
     "Version": "2012-10-17",
     "Statement": [
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:GetBucketLocation",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>"
       },
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:PutObject",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>/*"
       }
     ]
   }
   ```

   Copy the following AWS (Amazon Web Services) CLI commands and replace the `<roleName>` placeholders with your AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role name. Then, run the commands from the command prompt to create and attach the policy to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role.

   To install the AWS CLI, see the [AWS CLI documentation.](http://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/userguide/cli-chap-install.html)

   ```bash
   # Get your AWS account ID
   AWS_ACCOUNT_ID=$(aws sts get-caller-identity --query Account --output text)
   # Create policy
   aws iam create-policy \
     --policy-name MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy \
     --policy-document file://s3-access-policy.json
   # Attach to role
   aws iam attach-role-policy \
     --role-name <roleName> \
     --policy-arn arn:aws:iam::$AWS_ACCOUNT_ID:policy/MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy
   ```

   To learn how to create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) identity-based policy using the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Management Console or other methods, see the [Amazon S3 policies documentation.](http://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/access_policies_create.html)

4. (Optional) Create a Cloud Backup private endpoint for export over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink.

   If you want to enable snapshot exports over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink, create a Cloud Backup PrivateLink endpoint using the [atlas api cloudBackups createBackupPrivateEndpoint](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api-cloudBackups-createBackupPrivateEndpoint/) command.

   In the request body file, specify the following parameters:

   | Request Body Parameter | Value | Necessity |
   | --- | --- | --- |
   | `cloudProvider` | `AWS` | Required |
   | `regionName` | The AWS (Amazon Web Services) region of the S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket that you want to export snapshots to. | Required |
   | `vpcRegionName` | The AWS (Amazon Web Services) region of the source cluster where your snapshots are stored. Atlas provisions a VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) interface endpoint in this region to enable export over a private connection between the source cluster and the S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket in the specified `regionName`. This can be the same or a different region from the S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket that you specify in `regionName`. Defaults to the value of `regionName` if not specified. | Optional |

   **Example:**

   The following request body file defines an AWS (Amazon Web Services) backup private endpoint that Atlas can use to export snapshots from an AWS (Amazon Web Services) source cluster in `us-west-2` to an AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket in `us-east-1` over a private connection:

   ```javascript
   {
     "cloudProvider": "AWS",
     "regionName": "US_EAST_1",
     "vpcRegionName": "US_WEST_2"
   }
   ```

   Run the following command to create the backup private endpoint:

   ```bash
   atlas api cloudBackups createBackupPrivateEndpoint --file=<path>/backup-private-endpoint-payload.json
   ```

1) Set up AWS access for Atlas.

2) Create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

3) Attach a bucket access policy to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) IAM role.

   ```json
   {
     "Version": "2012-10-17",
     "Statement": [
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:GetBucketLocation",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>"
       },
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:PutObject",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>/*"
       }
     ]
   }
   ```

   ```bash
   # Get your AWS account ID
   AWS_ACCOUNT_ID=$(aws sts get-caller-identity --query Account --output text)
   # Create policy
   aws iam create-policy \
     --policy-name MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy \
     --policy-document file://s3-access-policy.json
   # Attach to role
   aws iam attach-role-policy \
     --role-name <roleName> \
     --policy-arn arn:aws:iam::$AWS_ACCOUNT_ID:policy/MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy
   ```

4) (Optional) Create a Cloud Backup private endpoint for export over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink.

   If you want to enable snapshot exports over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink, create a Cloud Backup PrivateLink endpoint by sending a `POST` request to the Cloud Backup [Create One Object Storage Private Endpoint](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/api/doc/atlas-admin-api-v2/operation/operation-creategroupbackupprivateendpoint) endpoint. This creates a private connection between the cluster from which you source snapshots and the S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket to which you want to export snapshots.

   In the request body, specify the following fields:

   | Request Body Field | Value | Necessity |

   The following request body defines an AWS (Amazon Web Services) backup private endpoint that Atlas can use to export snapshots from an AWS (Amazon Web Services) source cluster in `us-west-2` to an AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket in `us-east-1` over a private connection:

   ```javascript
   {
     "cloudProvider": "AWS",
     "regionName": "US_EAST_1",
     "vpcRegionName": "US_WEST_2"
   }
   ```

   ```json
   {
     "Version": "2012-10-17",
     "Statement": [
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:GetBucketLocation",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>"
       },
       {
         "Effect": "Allow",
         "Action": "s3:PutObject",
         "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::<bucketName>/*"
       }
     ]
   }
   ```

   ```bash
   # Get your AWS account ID
   AWS_ACCOUNT_ID=$(aws sts get-caller-identity --query Account --output text)
   # Create policy
   aws iam create-policy \
     --policy-name MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy \
     --policy-document file://s3-access-policy.json
   # Attach to role
   aws iam attach-role-policy \
     --role-name <roleName> \
     --policy-arn arn:aws:iam::$AWS_ACCOUNT_ID:policy/MongoDBAtlasSnapshotExportPolicy
   ```

   These commands grant the same permissions as the `put-role-policy` command that the Atlas UI displays when you [create the export bucket configuration](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-configure-snapshot-policy-aws). If you attach the policy now, you only need to confirm it in the Atlas UI.

4. (Optional) Create a Cloud Backup private endpoint using the Atlas Administration API for export over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink.

   ```javascript
   {
     "cloudProvider": "AWS",
     "regionName": "US_EAST_1",
     "vpcRegionName": "US_WEST_2"
   }
   ```

### Export Snapshots Automatically

To create an export policy for automatic exports, run the following procedure:

1. Create an export bucket configuration in Atlas

   **Note:**

   Before you can configure an export bucket in Atlas, complete the [prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) to set up Atlas access to your AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

   To enable Atlas to export Cloud Backup snapshots to AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service), create an export bucket configuration in Atlas that references an existing AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket. To export snapshots over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink, set `requirePrivateNetworking` to `true` so that Atlas uses the private endpoint that you created in the prerequisites.

   To create the bucket configuration, use the [atlas api cloudBackups createExportBucket](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api-cloudBackups-createExportBucket/) Atlas CLI command. Include the following fields in the command's request body file:

   | Request Body Field | Value | Necessity |
   | --- | --- | --- |
   | `cloudProvider` | `AWS` | Required |
   | `bucketName` | Name of the AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket that is authorized to receive Atlas Cloud Backup snapshots. To set up Atlas access to this bucket, see the [Prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) section. | Required |
   | `iamRoleId` | Unique 24-hexadecimal character string that identifies the unified AWS access role ID that Atlas must use to access the AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) Bucket. This is the ID of the cloud provider access role that you created for your AWS IAM role in the [Prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) section. To learn more, see [Set Up Unified AWS Access.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/security/set-up-unified-aws-access.md#std-label-set-up-unified-aws-access) | Required |
   | `requirePrivateNetworking` | Set to `true` to export snapshots to this bucket over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink. If set to `true`, Atlas uses the private endpoint you created in the [Prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) section to export snapshots to the bucket over a private connection. Otherwise, set to `false` to export snapshots to the bucket over the public network. | Required |

   **Example:**

   The following request body creates an export bucket configuration for an existing AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket named `exemplary-bucket`. This Atlas bucket configuration requires Atlas to export all snapshots over a private endpoint.

   ```javascript
   {
     "cloudProvider": "AWS",
     "iamRoleId": "668c5f0ed436263134491592",
     "bucketName": "exemplary-bucket",
     "requirePrivateNetworking": true
   }
   ```

   **Important:**

   The response returns the bucket ID value (`_id`), which you need to reference when you create a snapshot export job or configure automatic snapshot exports.

2. Add an export policy to your Cloud Backup schedule

   To set up automatic exports for your Cloud Backup snapshots, add an export policy to your Cloud Backup schedule. An export policy specifies the export bucket and frequency type for snapshots to export. The frequency type can be `daily`, `weekly`, `monthly`, or `yearly`.

   Atlas doesn't export every snapshot automatically. Atlas exports only the snapshots that a [backup policy item](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) creates with the same frequency type that you specify in the export policy.

   To create an export policy, use the [atlas api cloudBackups updateBackupSchedule](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api-cloudBackups-updateBackupSchedule/) command and include the following fields in the request body file:

   | Request Body Field | Value |
   | --- | --- |
   | `autoExportEnabled` | `true`. This enables Atlas to export Cloud Backup Snapshots to the Export Bucket configured in `export`. |
   | `export.exportBucketId` | Unique identifier of the export bucket configuration that references the object storage location to export the backup snapshot to. To retrieve the ID for your export bucket configuration, see [Manage Snapshot Export.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export.md#std-label-cloud-backup-manage-snapshot-export) |
   | `export.frequencyType` | Frequency associated with the [backup policy item](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) that you want to export snapshots from. Value can be `daily`, `weekly`, `monthly`, or `yearly`. |

   **Example:**

   Consider the following [Cloud Backup policy](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) that sets a weekly and monthly snapshot schedule:

   | Frequency Unit | Every | Retention Time | Snapshot Time |
   | --- | --- | --- | --- |
   | Weekly | Sunday | 12:30 UTC | 7 days |
   | Monthly | Last day of month | 12:30 UTC | 6 weeks |

   To enable automatic export of snapshots with a `monthly` frequency type, run the [atlas api cloudBackups updateBackupSchedule](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api-cloudBackups-updateBackupSchedule/) command with the following request body file:

   ```json
   {
     "autoExportEnabled": true,
     "export": {
       "exportBucketId": "32b6e34b3d91647abb20e7b8",
       "frequencyType": "monthly"
      }
   }
   ```

   With this setup, Atlas exports the snapshot that is taken on the last day of each month because its frequency type matches the `export` frequency type.

1) Create an export bucket configuration in Atlas

   To create the bucket configuration, send a `POST` request to the Cloud Backup [Create One Snapshot Export Bucket](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/api/doc/atlas-admin-api-v2/operation/operation-creategroupbackupexportbucket) endpoint. Include the following fields in your request body:

   ```javascript
   {
     "cloudProvider": "AWS",
     "iamRoleId": "668c5f0ed436263134491592",
     "bucketName": "exemplary-bucket",
     "requirePrivateNetworking": true
   }
   ```

   **Important:**

   The response returns the bucket ID value (`_id`), which you need to reference when you create a snapshot export job or configure automatic snapshot exports.

2) Add an export policy to your Cloud Backup schedule

   To create an export policy, send a `PATCH` request to the Cloud Backup [Update Group Cluster Backup Schedule](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/api/doc/atlas-admin-api-v2/operation/operation-updategroupclusterbackupschedule) endpoint and include the following fields in the request body:

   | Request Body Field | Value |
   | --- | --- |
   | `autoExportEnabled` | `true`. This enables Atlas to export Cloud Backup Snapshots to the Export Bucket configured in `export`. |
   | `export.exportBucketId` | Unique identifier of the export bucket configuration that references the object storage location to export the backup snapshot to. To retrieve the ID for your export bucket configuration, see [Manage Snapshot Export.](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export.md#std-label-cloud-backup-manage-snapshot-export) |
   | `export.frequencyType` | Frequency associated with the [backup policy item](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) that you want to export snapshots from. Value can be `daily`, `weekly`, `monthly`, or `yearly`. |

   **Example:**

   Consider the following [Cloud Backup policy](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/configure-backup-policy.md#std-label-configure-backup-policy) that sets a weekly and monthly snapshot schedule:

   | Frequency Unit | Every | Retention Time | Snapshot Time |
   | --- | --- | --- | --- |
   | Weekly | Sunday | 12:30 UTC | 7 days |
   | Monthly | Last day of month | 12:30 UTC | 6 weeks |

   This policy takes a snapshot every Sunday and on the last day of each month. If the last day of the month falls on a Sunday, the policy takes one snapshot for that day.

   To enable automatic export of snapshots with a `monthly` frequency type, send a `PATCH` request to the Cloud Backup [Update Group Cluster Backup Schedule](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/api/doc/atlas-admin-api-v2/operation/operation-updategroupclusterbackupschedule) endpoint with the following request body:

   ```json
   {
     "autoExportEnabled": true,
     "export": {
       "exportBucketId": "32b6e34b3d91647abb20e7b8",
       "frequencyType": "monthly"
      }
   }
   ```

   With this setup, Atlas exports the snapshot that is taken on the last day of each month because its frequency type matches the `export` frequency type.

1. In Atlas, go to the Backup details for your project.

   If it's not already displayed, select the organization that contains your project from the Organizations menu in the navigation bar.

   If it's not already displayed, select your project from the Projects menu in the navigation bar.

### Export a Single Snapshot Manually

To create an export job for a single snapshot, run the following procedure:

1. Create an export bucket configuration in Atlas

   **Note:**

   Before you can configure an export bucket in Atlas, complete the [prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) to set up Atlas access to your AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket.

   To enable Atlas to export Cloud Backup snapshots to AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service), create an export bucket configuration in Atlas that references an existing AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket. To export snapshots over AWS (Amazon Web Services) PrivateLink, set `requirePrivateNetworking` to `true` so that Atlas uses the private endpoint that you created in the prerequisites.

   To create the bucket configuration, use the [atlas api cloudBackups createExportBucket](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api-cloudBackups-createExportBucket/) Atlas CLI command. Include the following fields in the command's request body file:

   | Request Body Field | Value | Necessity |
   | --- | --- | --- |
   | `cloudProvider` | `AWS` | Required |
   | `bucketName` | Name of the AWS (Amazon Web Services) S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket that is authorized to receive Atlas Cloud Backup snapshots. To set up Atlas access to this bucket, see the [Prerequisites](https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/backup/cloud-backup/export/aws-s3.md#std-label-cloud-backup-export-prereqs-aws) section. | Required |
