Product Designer, Documentation

New York City

MongoDB’s Education team is a looking for a Product Designer who is passionate about improving the world through design and making technology accessible to more people. This designer should care deeply about taking complicated concepts and distilling them down in simple ways that many people can understand.

The right person for this role is someone that thrives on understanding the core learning needs of software engineers and can help define a documentation experience that best guides developers and database administrators on how to use an unfamiliar product. The documentation is essential to everyone using MongoDB. We are looking for an innovative designer that can help take MongoDB documentation beyond static reference, API, and tutorial content, as we work to provide more interactive and engaging user experience tailored to each persona we serve.

The Product Designer, Education role will be on the Product Design team, but will mainly be embedded on the Documentation team, collaborating with this group of dedicated engineers and technical writers to educate MongoDB users and equip them to be successful.

Hard Skills

  • Data driven. Uses qualitative and quantitative data to iterate on new designs. Must be comfortable pivoting quickly in light of new data
  • Deep understanding of information architecture principles and content organization best practices
  • Ability to conduct or use foundational research on different learning styles
  • Strong visual design skills, but can deliver less than pixel-perfect mocks for discussion and ideation
  • Knowledge of when to use data to inform possible design solutions, but doesn’t let the data dictate all possible pathways
  • Adept at designing, prototyping, testing, implementing, and evaluating user experiences of products on multiple platforms
  • Ability to elicit ideas from other team members, brainstorm with other team members, and bring the best ideas to life through simple and elegant design solutions
  • Has experience creating or implementing user research studies

Soft Skills

  • Personable. Being either introverted or extroverted is fine, but this person must be able to work with roles from all functions and strongly advocate for expressing user needs through design
  • Being comfortable with feedback from unexpected places. The Documentation team is tight-knit, collaborative and many team members have extensive backgrounds in education
  • Intellectual curiosity, always asking “how can we improve?”
  • Cares deeply about the impact of their work. The beauty of the design lies in how well the end-user can learn a new topic as a result of the design of the tool
  • Has a positive, resourceful mindset, looking for ways to get things done instead of listing all the potential blockers
  • Humility, as the best ideas for product improvement may often come from others on the team
  • Firmly held beliefs are confidently expressed, but can change based on new evidence or another well-reasoned perspective

  • Help define and implement the user experience for MongoDB Documentation, both in the docs site and in learning experiences integrated with MongoDB  products and services
  • Develop a deep understanding of users through ongoing research and analysis of user behavior patterns
  • Contribute to high-level strategic decisions with the rest of the product team and other stakeholders
  • Give and solicit feedback from other designers in order to continually raise our bar for quality
  • Partner with PMs, engineers, and content strategists to oversee the user experience of a product from concept to launch
  • Own our core values and adhere to them in your work
  • Stay up to date with best practices in various aspects of product design (interaction design, user research, etc.)

Success Measures

A Product Designer on the Education team will be successful in this role when they:

  • Are open, honest and proactively contributes and collaborate with others
  • Develop confidence in finding their way across the platform and organization
  • Believe in servant-leadership
  • Are willing and able to learn and contribute to all parts of the design and development service ecosystem

To be successful in this role, the Product Designer on the Documentation team will accomplish the following in the first 90 days:

  • 30 days: Understand the products within MongoDB's portfolio, how they're built, and the teams who build them
  • 60 days: Design a new improvement to the learning experience, and help facilitate its shipment
  • 90 days: Have designed and shipped at least two (2) improvements to the learning experience
